This summer, we are all looking forward to some rest and relaxation to make up for the stress of the last two years in Melbourne. And what better way to prepare for some serious leisure time than getting your home looking good and feeling cool and welcoming? Here’s how:

Give your summer equipment a clean

First of all, if you haven’t already done so, now is the time to lift the lid and spend a couple of hours giving the barbecue a good clean. Check your supplies as well – tongs, gas bottle, foil and cooking oil so you can barbecue with ease when it really heats up.

Check your air conditioning and make sure it’s working and you know where the remote is. Another energy-efficient idea is to ensure your outside air-conditioning unit is shaded, with plants or a small fence, to keep it working efficiently.

Give your ceiling fans a clean and a test run to make sure you’re not caught out on the first hot day

If you have a pool, check your equipment and get your water tested before the summer really kicks in.

Clear out your freezer and defrost it so there’s lots of space for ice cubes and ice cream. It will run more efficiently in summer if it’s defrosted first.

Now is also a good time to ensure your house is keeping out the heat – exterior blinds, sun shading and insulation will all make a big difference to your comfort levels, so plan ahead to cool your home naturally.

Finally, don’t forget to clear gutters, rake up dead leaves and trim back plants to reduce the risk of fire.

Have a declutter before Christmas, if you can

Charity shops are bursting after Christmas, as everyone makes room for all the new toys they got on Christmas Day. Get ahead if you can with a quick sweep of your kids’ clothes and old toys, books and kitchenware, and anything else you’ve been meaning to get rid of. You’ll save charity shops a headache in January and enjoy the holiday season with a clean, organised house.

Add some greenery

While fresh flowers are lovely, there is also lots of greenery in the garden at this time of year, and bringing this into the house, along with a few flowers, is a beautiful way to make your home look more festive and welcoming without the expense of bought flowers.

Look at our blog on gardening – now is a great time for native blooms and greenery and these are more sustainable than imported flowers.

Update your decor

As well as greenery, it’s lovely to have candles and tea lights on the dining table for balmy summer evenings. Fairy lights are another easy way to create a festive atmosphere at night.

In summer, the most important thing to do when people come to your house for a barbecue or party is to get a frosty cold drink into their hands. New glassware will make a great impression, and you won’t have to worry about running out if you stock up. A large glass jug full of iced water, maybe with some floating cucumber or a dash of lemon, is another summer entertaining essential.

Clean your outdoor seating and add some extra shade, if you can. An oversized free-standing umbrella is a wonderful way to cool down your garden and enjoy a shaded alfresco area without the cost of a pergola.

Finally, go big on colour. This summer is all about fresh, vibrant tones – deep greens, pinks and blues – and natural fabrics such as linen. You don’t have to spend a fortune to update your home, even some new cushion covers, table linen or bright salad bowls in the latest colours can make a big difference. Finally, relax and enjoy the holiday season – we’ve all earned it!
