As the weather starts to cool down, it can be all too tempting to stay inside, rugged up under a blanket with a good book, but winter is a great time to get out and explore all the fitness options available in the Wyndham City area.
Wyndham City offers some great fitness options, from gentle yoga and pilates sessions through to bike paths, walking trails and Active Wyndham sessions.
Winter sports
Now that summer sports competitions have finished, winter sports are starting up. If you prefer a team sport over getting fit by yourself, you’ve got plenty of options in the Wyndham City region.
We are proud sponsors of the Point Cook Centrals sporting club, which competes in the Western Region Football league. The club offers men and women’s football, junior football for boys and girls, netball and Auskick.
The Tarneit Football Club offers AFL competitions to juniors, seniors and women, while the Wyndham Suns Football Netball Club have teams for under 9s, under 10’s, under 12’s, seniors and reserves.
If netball is more your style, The Wyndham Netball Association caters for netballers from the ages of 5 and up with Net Set Go, Junior, Open Age Ladies and Mixed competitions. The Hoppers Crossing Netball Association also offers teams across a number of age groups and skill levels including Net Set Go.
Have you tried Lacrosse? The Wyndham Lacrosse Club is a new sporting association in the Wyndham City area for junior players at this stage. For older junior and senior players, the club has teamed up with the Altona Lacrosse Club to open up more playing opportunities.
Burnout Bhangra
Combine fitness, fun and dance with a Burnout Bhangra session on Tuesday nights at the Penrose Promenade Community Centre in Tarneit. Bhangra is a North Indian high intensity dance and is a great way to get fit and have a dance midweek. The sessions are free, and everyone above the age of 12 can join in. You do need to register and then just turn up on the night!
The Man Walk
This one is just for the blokes and is a great way to meet some new people, all while having the opportunity to have a chat in a positive, supportive and inclusive environment. The Man Walk happens every Saturday morning, and takes about an hour, taking in Wyndham Park, Werribee River and Chirnside Park Oval.
Yoga and pilates
Yoga and pilates are great options for winter fitness. Stretching the muscles, relaxing your mind, improving your circulation and supporting the lymphatic system (which in turn builds your immune system) are all good reasons to find your closest yoga studio.
You’ll find yoga and pilates studios dotted across the Wyndham City area, with Western Wellness Yoga in Point Cook, YogPriya in Werribee, and Aum Yoga and Meditation in Tarneit all popular options.
Women and girls fitness sessions
Sometimes it’s nice to train on your own yet surrounded by other like-minded people. Reclink Australia are running women and girls fitness sessions for women over the age of 16. Sessions cover strength, core, flexibility and cardio exercises and are open to women of all fitness levels, with all sessions delivered by a female instructor. Sessions are at the Tarneit Community Learning Centre, and need to be pre-booked (they are however free).
Aquatic sports
Winter doesn’t need to mean the end of swimming and other aquatic activities. Aquapulse is an indoor aquatic and gym centre in Hoppers Crossing offering swimming lessons, AquaFit, a 50m pool, a 25m pool, spa, sauna, steam room, warm water pool, splash park, water slides and a range of fitness classes as well as a gym and reformer pilates sessions.
